Camping With Fido

Do you like to head off into the great outdoors on weekends? If so, your canine pal would most likely be thrilled to accommodate you. Fido is a great camping buddy! You do want to take some precautions to keep your pet safe and happy, however. A Jefferson, IA area vet offers some tips on camping with Fido in this article. 

Preparation

Check with your vet before taking your pup with you. Fido should be current on his vaccines and parasite control. He should also be microchipped and wearing proper ID tags. 

Packing

You’ll need to pack a bag for your pup. Fido will need food, bedding, dishes, a tie-out line, a first-aid kit, treats, toys, towels, and, if you’ll be near water, a doggy lifejacket. 

Water

The same restrictions apply to dogs as to people for this. Don’t let your canine buddy slurp up water from rivers, lakes, and ponds. If you can’t bring enough bottled water along, boil or treat water before giving it to your pet. 

Training

We strongly recommend working on your dog’s petucation before taking him camping. Fido should know—and obey—simple commands, like Sit , Stay , Heel , Come , and Lay Down . You don’t want your furry friend chasing after a wild animal, or running up to dangerous areas! 

Fire

Fires and dogs can be a wonderful mix, but they can be dangerous. Don’t let your pup get too close to the flames! In the morning, you’ll need to be careful in the mornings as well. Once the fire’s out, Fido could run over the fire site, and burn his paws on hot coals. 

Trash

Trash is another concern. Fido has been known to dig for leftovers! The garbage may contain things like skewers, can lids, tin foil, and bones, none of which are good for dogs. You also don’t want to leave trash out in the open, where it could attract wild animals. Check local ordinances for proper disposal tips. 

Waste

Always pick up after Fido. Some places allow you to bury your dog’s waste, but you need to check first. Dog feces is a major source of water contamination.

Pup Check

Do a thorough, nose-to-tail check on Fido every day. You’re looking for things like ticks, insect bites, and any other signs of illness or injury.
