Adopting A Senior Dog

November 1, 2021

November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month. This is one cause that is truly near and dear to our hearts. We love seeing older dogs get second chances! Not only are pooches in their senior years super cute, they also make wonderful pets. Read on as a local Jefferson, IA area vet offers some advice on adopting a dog in his golden years.

Finding Fido

Older dogs often have a very hard time getting adopted, just because so many people pass them over for puppies. This is understandable–after all, puppies are absolutely adorable. However, what many people don’t realize is that senior pets also have some great qualities. Fido is going to be much calmer than a younger pooch would be. He won’t need as much activity or playtime, and he’s probably not too interested in chasing the neighbor’s cat. Plus, he’s probably already trained! And, many older dogs just have a very sweet, placid demeanor, and only want someone to love them. How can you resist?

Getting Settled

A trip to the pet store is in order. Keep Fido’s age in mind as you go shopping. Your pooch will need food, toys, treats, food, and grooming supplies. You’ll also need to pick up dishes, a comfy harness or collar, and a good leash. A high-quality bed is also a must. Orthopedic beds are good options for dogs in their golden years.

Meet The Doctor

Most of the time, an older dog that is available for adoption will already have been fixed, and should be current on vaccines and parasite control. However, Fido will need a nose-to-tail exam. This is very important! For one thing, those screenings and panels could reveal a medical condition that is just developing. You’ll also be able to get some great tips on your canine buddy’s care and needs.

Tail Wags

Dogs get very attached to their humans, but that bond needs love and time to grow. Some pups will immediately decide that you’re the best thing since sliced bacon, and will stick happily by your side at all times. Others will be more wary, and may need time to trust. Don’t force attention on Fido! Focus on giving him good care, and earning his trust.
