National Beagle Day

History

The origins of the Beagle are shrouded in history. The name Beagle could have originated from the word beag , which was Gaelic for ‘little.’ It might also stand for be’geule , which is a French ‘translation’ of the sound hunting dogs make. In any case, it seems that Fido has been around for quite a while. Records of hounds being used for hunting in Britain predate the arrival of the Romans, which happened back in 55 BC. Things get a bit clearer after the Civil War. The AKC officially registered the first Beagle, a pup named Blunder, in 1885.

Grooming

Beagles wear a variety of colors. Their coats can be lemon yellow, red, or white, to tricolored. As you may know, these pups have adorable floppy ears. You’ll need to keep your pup’s ears clean. Like all dogs with folded ears, they are prone to ear infections. Regular brushing is also very important. Beagles shed continuously through the year, but they shed the most heavily in spring. Dental care and nail trims are also important. Ask your vet for specific care tips.

Hound Dog

The Beagle is a scenthound, so he is a natural tracker. He’s also a foothound, which means that he can be followed on foot. This trait was once highly valued. Back in the old days, many people hunted their food. Not everyone was able to afford a horse, which made hunting difficult. People with Beagles could keep up with their prey on foot. 

It’s worth mentioning that Beagles are known for following their noses, and are prone to running off after scents. Don’t let Fido run around off-leash. Also, make sure that your fencing is secure. 

Activity

Beagles are small, but don’t let their size fool you. They are very active, and need plenty of exercise and playtime. They’re also extremely sociable, and tend to get into mischief when left alone. Make sure your canine companion has a friend to keep him company when you’re out!
