Bringing Your Shelter Dog Home

October 15, 2021

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month. And, Make A Dog’s Day is coming up on the 22nd. Of course, there’s no better way to celebrate these two occasions than by adopting a shelter dog. Many people report that shelter dogs are the best pets, because they’re just so loving and grateful to their saviors. If you’re bringing a shelter dog into your home, you definitely have our support. A Jefferson, IA area vet offers some advice on the big day below!

Petproofing

Dogs are very curious. Some, unfortunately, try to investigate things by chewing them. This can be very dangerous, as many things around the house are choking or entanglement risks. You’ll want to put anything Fido shouldn’t eat or play with out of paws’ reach. This includes anything small or sharp; items with ropes or cords; chemicals; medications; plastic wrappers and ties; and toxic plants.

Shopping

Your new pooch will need some doggy necessities. Your shopping list should include things like bedding, toys, treats, dishes, and grooming supplies. Fido will also need food. If you can find out what brand he’s been eating, start with that. When you take your furry friend to meet his new veterinarian–which should happen pretty quickly–you’ll be able to get specific advice on what he

should be eating.

Walk

It’s a good idea to take your canine pal for a walk before bringing him into the house. This will give him a chance to get a feel for his new territory, and just absorb the fact that he’s left the shelter. Plus, it will allow your pup a chance to burn off any excess energy he has.

Introductions

If you have other pets, you’ll have a few additional steps to make sure they all get started out on the right foot—or paw—together. If you have another pup, it’s best to introduce them before finalizing the adoption, to make sure they’ll get along. With a kitty, you’ll want to keep them separated at first. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.
