6 Pawsome Ways to Keep a Senior Dog Comfortable

May 1, 2020

Is your canine buddy officially in his golden years? Fido will never retire from his main duty: being a loyal, lovable, and adorable companion. However, he will slow down as he grows older, and will benefit from some extra TLC. A Jefferson, IA area vet lists some simple ways to keep your furry pal content in this article.

Comfy Beds

Your canine companion won’t sleep very well on a thin pad. Get Fido a good doggy bed, where he can look extra adorable as he’s dreaming about bacon. You may actually want to get your pet more than one, so he has a comfy spot in every room.

Regular Exercise

Just like people, dogs tend to slow down as they grow older. There’s nothing wrong with that. However, don’t let your four-legged buddy become a complete couch potato. Fido will still need regular activity. Your pup’s exact workout needs will vary based on his age, weight, and breed, but most dogs require a daily walk, at the very least. Savor these relaxing strolls with your furry best friend!

Grooming

Keep up with your dog’s beauty care needs! Your furry friend will be much more comfortable if his coat is clean and soft. Nail trims are also important. Overgrown nails may not sound like a big problem, but they can actually be quite uncomfortable for Fido. Your pooch may change his gait as a result, which will put additional stress on his bones and joints. Keep those claws clipped!

Wellness Care

First and foremost, keep up with your pup’s wellness care. Regular exams will increase the odds of any medical issues being caught—and therefore treated—early. It’s also important to stay up to date with Fido’s preventative care, such as vaccinations, dental exams, and parasite control products.

Elevated Dishes

Raised dishes are much more comfortable for dogs to eat from than bowls on the floor. Fido has to strain his neck and back to eat off the ground. That’s no fun!

Belly Rubs

While we can’t officially prescribe belly rubs, it is important to make sure that your canine pal feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to Fido, and spend time with him every day. Senior dog tail wags are super precious!
